Mr Giles Davies

Referral To The Breast Clinic

The Cromwell Hospital is conventiently located near Earls Court Tube Station and there is parking in the Sainsburys Car Park just past the Hospital which is free for two hours. There is a lovely coffee shop on site and the Hospital has everything you need all on site and is one of the most modern and well equipeed Hospitals in London.

You will be seen by Mr Davies together with his specialist breast nurse Sana or Steffie, you may well meet Beata his PA who is often on hand to say hello. You will check in at one of the many reception staff desks and Mr Davies will call you in at your appointed time. We understand how stressful it is to be asked intimate questions and to be examined and Mr Davies will put you at ease, remember he is here to help you. . He will ask you some background questions about the nature of your symptoms and will examine you. If you need a mammogram or ultrasound (or both) these will be done immediately and the results available there and then. If a biopsy (needle test to take a sample of a lump) is needed, this will also be done immediately and the results usually available the same day or early the following day. It is common for Mr Davies to ring you on your mobile phone with results as soon as they become available or arrange to see you if needed again to discuss them. The clinics are busy andon occassions Mr Davies will prioritise time for patients with new diagnoses of cancer. By the time you have had a consultation, a mammogram and an ultrasound if needed and discussed the results it may be an hour in total.

Your insurance details and any previous mammograms if you have them, as well as a referral letter is desirable. As Mr Davies oftens sees patients at short notice do not worry if the referral letter is not ready and follows your actual appointment. BUPA and other providors now recognise the importance of rapid diagnosis and assessment. As a Specialist Centre fro BUPA if you are insured with BUPA everything will be covered and you do not need to worry if additional tests are required, we take care of that for you.

Most clinics although busy will not result in anyone being diagnosed with cancer, most lumps are harmless, but it still is a stressful experience to attend a clinic facing personal questions, an intimate examination and possibly tests. The role of the clinic specialist nurse is vital to make you feel relaxed and able to speak openly, we try very very hard to make the “experience” one that is empowering and give patients the tools and confidence they need to be breast aware. For benign conditions Mr Davies will provide you with written advice and information about how you can manage and reduce your symptoms. This may include advice on supplements, checking Vitamin D levels, dietary advice and holistic and alternative measures such as acupuncture. This is an important and often neglected aspect of breast care and something we focus on as we feel it is important. Many patients are in the 30-50 year old age bracket with stressful jobs, young children and perhaps recent experiences such as a family member, friend or work colleague who has had breast cancer. The holistic nature of our service is designed to address these issues, not just simply provide quick reassurance.

If your lump or mammogram shows cancer it will be a big shock. This is a difficult time. You will need time to absorb the diagnosis, and careful support. Our breast care nurses will spend as long as is needed with you to support you, give you written information and make a plan for the next steps of your journey. We will check your contact details and inform your GP of the diagnosis on your behalf. No big decisions are made immediately, patients need time and space to reflect on decisions. Some patients like to move forward quickly, others need more information and time. A follow up appointment is usually made to take discussions forward and plan treatment. All patients will have access to a dedicated breast care nurse who will be a port of call for support, information, guidance and reassurance.
